It’s time to predict the results of the Summer Showdown! Here are the results of 1,000 simulations of each tournament, using SAMP-based predictions for each matchup. You probably know the drill by now, so here’s how it all turned out!

First, the Asian region:

No surprise here: Shanghai wins it nearly nine out of 10 times. The Dragons’ SAMP has come down to a slightly more realistic level than it was in May, when they were predicted to win 97.6% of the time, but they’re still a dominant force.

Unlike in May, however, every team took home the title in at least one simulation. Granted, three of those teams did it less than one percent of the time, “but you’re saying there’s a chance?” Yes, yes there is.

So who has that chance in North America?

The answer? Not too many teams.

Given all the upsets we saw on Friday, it’s not surprising that the double-digit seeds fare poorly, though I thought at least one of them might sneak away with a tournament win. That wasn’t the case, however, with the worst case being Washington, who won just 1% of the time against San Francisco and did manage to make the finals 0.4% of the time — only to (probably) be crushed by Atlanta or Philadelphia.

And in case you forgot, Vancouver is still not a good team. It’s nice that they went 2-1 to get that #4 seed, but they did it by beating a pair of bottom-tier teams. Even in the 37 times out of 1,000 that they squeaked past Paris, they probably went up against the Shock in round two and … well, I don’t think those matches were too pretty.

If you liked upsets, I hope you got your fill of them on Friday, because they seem like an even iffier proposition on Saturday. Sunday should have some interesting match-ups, at least, assuming that anyone can hang with San Francisco. Philadelphia wasn’t up to the task, but Atlanta or even Paris might be.

In Asia, I think things will be a lot closer, and if Shanghai falters, it will really open things up for the rest of the field. It should be a good weekend of action!
